  The preceptor's role  
 
  • Ensuring that students are participating in appropriate learning situations
  • Monitoring and assessing student development
  • Providing timely feedback to students
  • Fostering a positive learning environment.

The preceptor's role also includes being:

  • familiar with the ANMC competencies
  • enthusiastic about their work
  • accessible, approachable and friendly
  • able to provide ongoing feedback on student progress
  • able to act as a mentor to students
  • tolerant and patient
  • able to facilitate learning experiences
  • able to demonstrate clinical expertise in their practice area
  • able to assess students' knowledge and skill development
  • able to encourage students to be self directed in learning
  • able to encourage students to show initiative in their practice
  • familiar with the learning objectives of the unit
  • familiar with principles of adult learning
  • able to promote professionalism
  • able to model reflective practice for students
  • able to describe and reflect on their own professional knowledge and skills.
